We have over 70 acres of private woodland surrounding the park. It makes sense to start right here. You can step outside your door and immediately find designated trails without worrying about parking or driving. Dogs are welcome and can run off the lead in the woods, provided you keep them on a lead in the main park areas.
There is no set route to stick to, which means you can easily turn back whenever the children get tired or the weather turns. The trails are very peaceful, and guests often mention seeing roe deer, woodpeckers and the occasional buzzard among the trees. It’s ideal for a relaxed morning stroll before heading further out.
If you need a level surface, the Borwick Canal Towpath is the most practical local choice. Located just a five-minute drive away, you can walk directly alongside the Lancaster Canal, which means no steep inclines or muddy scrambling. This makes it suitable for pushchairs, older relatives or senior dogs who just need an even surface.
Because it is a straight towpath, you can simply turn around when you have had enough. The scenery is framed by hedgerows and local wildlife., while nearby Carnforth and the Pine Lake area offer great stops for a coffee or a pub lunch afterwards.
Ten minutes west of the park brings you to RSPB Leighton Moss. The paths here are made of well-maintained gravel and wooden boardwalks. It caters perfectly to visitors wanting a slow and educational visit.
You can walk between large wooden bird hides to sit and watch the expansive reedbeds. People come here specifically to look for marsh harriers and otters. It also has a highly rated on-site cafe at the visitor centre, making it a reliable choice for a structured afternoon out.

The path climbs steadily and rewards you with excellent vantage points over Morecambe Bay. Wildlife watchers often visit to spot rare butterflies and peregrine falcons. The George Washington pub sits right at the bottom in Warton village for food once you finish the loop.
Sometimes half the group wants a forest and the other half wants the coast. Silverdale solves this problem. A 15-minute drive takes you to the free National Trust car park at Eaves Wood.
From there you can follow a moderate path through ancient trees up to a stone monument known locally as the Pepperpot. The route has narrow stone gaps and uneven sections that older children tend to enjoy. You are also very close to Silverdale Cove if you want to walk along the sandy shoreline. Refuelling at The Silverdale Hotel is a popular choice afterwards.
Arnside Knott is a 5.8 mile route that takes roughly 20 minutes to drive to. The paths are mostly moderate, though the final section leading to the top is quite steep.
It is absolutely worth the short climb. The top offers one of the best and clearest views of the Kent Estuary and the Lake District fells in the whole area. You will walk through peaceful yew and oak woodlands before the landscape opens up completely. After heading back down, the Albion pub on the Arnside seafront is a popular place to eat.
For visitors who want a serious hike, the 11 mile loop around Over Kellet and Yealand Conyers will fill a whole day. It is only five minutes away from the park.
This route skips the coastal viewpoints and instead focuses on quiet country lanes and farming pastures. The sheer distance makes it physically demanding. You will pass historical landmarks like Borwick Hall and a 1697 Quaker Meeting House along the way. The New Inn in Yealand Conyers is a reliable stop halfway round to rest your legs.
Local parking is straightforward if you know where to go. Warton Crag, Eaves Wood and Arnside Knott have dedicated car parks that stay open 24 hours a day. Leighton Moss offers free parking for visitors though the main facilities close at 5:00 PM.
If you use the roadside parking near Sandside or the laybys in Over Kellet, please make sure you leave plenty of room for farm vehicles and residents to pass. Always check the weather before setting off, limestone paths become extremely slippery when wet.
