Dog Walking at Old Hall Caravan Park

You don't always need to get in the car to give your dog a good walk. Old Hall Caravan Park has over 70 acres of private woodland, with designated walking routes right on site.

Dogs need to stay on a lead around the main park, but they can be exercised off lead in the woodland walks. It's an easy option for a quick morning walk, a relaxed evening stroll or simply giving your dog some space to burn off some energy before heading back to your caravan.

Terrain: Woodland paths and natural ground

Borwick Canal Towpath

For a flat, gentle dog walk, head to the Lancaster Canal near Borwick, around five minutes from Old Hall.

The towpath gives you a straightforward route alongside the water, without the steep climbs or rocky terrain you'll find on some of the area's hillier walks. You can simply turn around when you've walked far enough, making it a particularly good option if you're travelling with an older dog or looking for a more relaxed stroll.

Lead: Check local signage and keep your dog under control around other path users

Warton Crag

If your dog is up for something a little more energetic, Warton Crag is around 10 minutes from Old Hall and offers a more challenging walk through rugged countryside.

The reserve rises steeply from the car park, with rocky paths, uneven ground and limestone terrain. In return, you'll get spectacular views across Morecambe Bay as well as plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife. The Wildlife Trust describes the walks as quite tough, so good footwear is a must.

Dogs must be kept on a lead here, partly because conservation grazing cattle can roam freely across the site. Ticks are also common, so remember to check yourself and your dog after your walk.

RSPB Leighton Moss

Around 10 minutes from Old Hall, RSPB Leighton Moss is a great option if you want to combine a gentle walk with wildlife watching.

The reserve has mostly level, well-maintained paths, but dogs aren't permitted on the main reserve footpaths. There is a designated dog-friendly route which takes you through the garden and along the Lower Trail and public bridleway, with dogs kept on leads.

It's worth checking the current dog-friendly route before setting off, as you won't be able to explore the whole reserve with your dog.

Dog Walking Tips for Your Stay

A little preparation can make exploring the local area with your dog much easier. Keep these tips in mind during your stay:

  • Check lead requirements: Some routes have livestock, wildlife or other restrictions, so check local signage and keep your dog under control.
  • Bring water: Not every route has facilities, and your dog may need more water than usual after a longer or hillier walk.
  • Wear suitable footwear: Woodland, limestone and countryside paths can become muddy, slippery or uneven, particularly after wet weather.
  • Check for ticks: Ticks are common in grassy and woodland areas, so give your dog a quick check after walks.
  • Take poo bags: Keep the countryside clean and be prepared to carry waste until you find a suitable bin.
  • Check conditions before coastal walks: Weather, tides and ground conditions can change quickly, so check ahead if you're heading towards the coast.

With woodland walks right on the doorstep and some of Lancashire and South Cumbria's most beautiful countryside just a short drive away, Old Hall Caravan Park makes a great base for a dog-friendly getaway. Whether you're after a gentle stroll or a more adventurous day out, there are plenty of places to explore with your four-legged friend.
