Difficulty: Easy, Distance: Up to 27 miles, Terrain: Flat towpath, Highlights: Wildlife, picnic spots, waterside views, Recommended: for ages 8+ depending on cycling confidence, Start Point: Lancaster city centre or Hest Bank car park.
This peaceful, mostly flat route is ideal for beginners or families looking for a relaxed ride. It follows the Lancaster Canal, offering traffic-free cycling alongside gently flowing water, traditional lock houses and lush countryside. There’s parking at the Millenium Bridge in Lancaster or at Hest Bank for easier access to rural sections.
The route is mostly out and back, so you can make it as long or short as you like. Start at Hest Bank and make your way down to Lancaster Canal towpath and follow the route around the canal and cycle back to your starting point for a leisurely, circular route. There are benches and grassy spots for picnics, and occasional pubs or tearooms in nearby villages like Galgate or Hest Bank. Safe for kids, with wide paths and minimal hazards. This cycle route is a bit more challenging, offering a mix of coastal views, forest paths, and moderate climbs. This route starts in the quiet village of Silverdale and loops around the picturesque Arnside area, so no need to backtrack, and traffic is generally low, though some lanes are narrow. Ideal for intermediate riders or anyone after a slightly more adventurous route. Stop for a coffee in Arnside or bring a packed lunch to enjoy at the bayfront. There is parking at Silverdale train station or in the village centre. The ride is just a 20-minute drive from Old Hall, so it’s easily doable as a half a day trip. This route is ideal for beginners or those seeking a leisurely ride by the sea. Stretching along the promenade, you’ll enjoy the views of the Bay, with the iconic Morecambe Bay in the distance.
This route is perfect for a relaxed cycle, and there are also plenty of places to stop, grab a bite and enjoy the seaside atmosphere, perfect for ice cream or fish and chips by the sea. Plus, the flat surface makes it an easy ride for any cyclist. Whether you’re cycling with family or just looking for a nice bike ride around the area, Morecambe Promenade offers the perfect setting for a summer day out, and it’s located only around a 25-minute drive away from Old Hall. Start Morecambe Battery Cark Park and make your way towards Happy Mount Park and enjoy the views by the beach and arrive back at the car park for an easy loop ride.
